Lagos Oil Refinery, Apapa: the best walk-in wage in the game.

Refining is one of the newest careers in Lagos Life, based at the Lagos Oil Refinery in Apapa by the port. You start as an Operator Trainee and rise through Panel Operator, Shift Supervisor and Plant Manager to Refinery GM. It trains Hustle and needs nothing to apply.

On the numbers, Refining is the best no-requirement job in the game. Its first-level pay is the highest of any career you can walk into, its promotion gates (Hustle 2, 4, 6 and 8) sit well below the mid-level careers', and its top title pays as much as many prestige careers. The only real downside is location: the refinery is a workplace and nothing else, out in Apapa.

In one line: The best first-level pay of any job you can walk into, with a top salary to match the prestige careers.

Weekly pay assumes all 5 shifts. On top of the base rate, winning 4 tasks in one shift earns the +15% “Employee of the shift” bonus, the governor's minimum-wage policy adds another 15% in the weeks it's chosen, and pay is only taxed once you earn more than ₦1,000,000 in a week. Leave a shift early and you're paid only for the part you worked.

Refinery shifts run 7 AM to 4 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Wednesday and Sunday are free, splitting the week into two short blocks, and every evening is yours. There's nothing to do at the refinery outside your shift, so plan your evenings elsewhere — Balogun Market on Lagos Island is the obvious stop for Hustle training on the way home.

That's 45 hours on the clock each week. Your days off are Wed, Sun. Rent is due every Saturday at 9 AM, so make sure Friday's pay is in hand before you spend it.

How promotion works

Promotion in Lagos Life needs two things at once: a full performance bar and the Hustle level for the next title. You start a new job at 50 performance, the bar has to reach 100, and every promotion drops it back to 45. If the bar is full but your skill is short, your boss tells you so and you stay where you are until you train.

Performance rises every hour you're on shift. The base rate depends on your mood, each Hustle level adds a little, and the work style you pick when the shift starts makes the biggest difference:

  • Do Your Work — 0 performance an hour; energy and fun −5 an hour.
  • Work Like Jaguda — +3.2 performance an hour; energy and fun −9 an hour.
  • Suck Up to Oga — +3.6 performance an hour; a gamble: +3.6 if it lands, −2 if it doesn't.
  • Gist with Colleagues — -0.6 performance an hour; social +14 an hour.
  • Take Am Easy — -2.4 performance an hour; saves energy, fun +2 an hour.

Estimates for a Happy mood (60/100) with Hustle sitting exactly at each gate, before task bonuses. A better mood or higher skill makes each shift count for more.

The takeaway: at 9 hours a shift, the bar fills in 2 shifts at a normal pace. Your Hustle level, not your attendance, is what really decides how fast you climb.

Tasks during your shift

Refinery shift tasks are safety-first mini-games. You walk the valve rounds tapping each valve that needs attention, and you run the gas test in the correct order before a work permit is signed. The gas test pays more performance than the average mini-game — it's the most important job on site, after all. Do them yourself rather than passing them on; that's how you collect four wins for the Employee of the Shift bonus.

How to train Hustle fast

Every in-game hour spent on a Hustle activity adds skill at that activity's rate, divided by 1 + 0.6 × your current level — so each level takes longer than the last. LAPO Babies and UNILAG freshers get ×1.25, and a mood above 40 adds ×1.15. These are the best places to train:

The best everyday option is Buy & Resell Goods at Balogun Market for ₦800 a go. Starting from zero, that's about 1.7 h to Hustle 2 (Panel Operator), 5.1 h to Hustle 4 (Shift Supervisor), 10 h to Hustle 6 (Plant Manager) and 17 h to Hustle 8 (Refinery GM). A LAPO Baby in a good mood needs only 12 h to reach Hustle 8. Shifts help too: each hour at work trains Hustle at 0.35, but that alone would take about 71 h on the clock to reach 8 — so train on your days off.

UNILAG bonus: graduates earn 3%–20% more per shift by degree class. No UNILAG course lines up with Refining for the extra 5%, but a First or 2:1 still lets you start at level 2.

Refining strategy: what actually works

Take it on day one

With no requirement and the best first-level pay of any open job, Refining is an excellent first career for every start. A Nepo Baby gets a higher salary from the bank, but for LAPO Babies and freshers there's no better walk-in wage.

Train Hustle at Balogun Market

Buy & Resell Goods at Balogun Market is the best Hustle trainer in Lagos and pays you while it trains you. A session on the way home after each shift keeps you ahead of the promotion gates.

Know your gates

Refining's promotions need Hustle 2, 4, 6 and 8 — one level more than most walk-in careers, but far below the mid-level careers that pay similar money (4, 5, 7 and 9). LAPO Babies, who start with Hustle 2, are ready for their first promotion as soon as the performance bar fills.

Use the free Wednesday

A free day in the middle of the week is perfect for longer training sessions, errands and gigs. It also keeps your mood up, which keeps your performance bar filling fast.

Add Hustle gigs

WhatsApp Hustle on your phone and an Instagram shop from a laptop desk at home both pay more for every Hustle level. As a Refining worker, you're training the right skill for both.

What to do with the money

Refining's strong early pay makes it one of the fastest careers for building savings. A POS Stand in your first week or two, then a Buka, then bigger businesses, is a realistic path. The Mack Haulage Trailer business suits a refinery worker's world — trucks and Apapa go together — but it's a big purchase, so build up to it.

How Refining compares

Weekly pay at level 5 (level-5 pay × shifts per week) for Refining and the careers just above and below it.

Other careers that train Hustle, so you can switch without starting from zero: Trading (₦63,000 at level 5), Hairstyling (₦67,500 at level 5), Event Planning (₦75,000 at level 5), Civil Service (₦76,000 at level 5).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Overlooking Refining because it's new. It's the best walk-in job in the game.
  • Hanging around Apapa after work. There's nothing to do at the refinery off shift.
  • Skipping Hustle training because the pay is already good. The later gates still need it.
  • Living far from Apapa without a plan for the 7 AM commute.

Is Refining right for you?

Pick Refining if you want the best salary you can get with no skill requirement and a ladder that's gentler than the prestige careers'. It's ideal for LAPO Babies (Hustle 2 from the start), UNILAG freshers who need money, and anyone who just wants a strong, simple career. If you'd prefer a Hustle office job, Civil Service needs Hustle 3 and works Monday to Friday; if you like markets more than machinery, Trading is the classic Hustle career.

Gigs that use Hustle

The same skill pays on your days off:

  • Run Instagram Shop — ₦400 + ₦700 × Hustle, needs Laptop Desk at home (₦18,000)
  • WhatsApp Hustle — ₦250 + ₦450 × Hustle
  • Buy & Resell Goods — ≈₦2,500 + ₦900 × Hustle at Balogun Market, needs ₦800 of stock
