What Is Lagos Life?

Lagos Life is a free multiplayer life simulation game set in a cartoon version of Lagos, Nigeria. You play it in a web browser, build a character, and live a Lagos life — job, rent, friends, dates, nightlife — in one shared city with other real players.

Lagos Life in one minute

Imagine The Sims, then move it to Lagos and fill the city with real people instead of computer-controlled neighbours. That's Lagos Life. You make a character, the game randomly decides whether you were born rich or broke, and from there you're on your own: find a job, keep yourself fed and rested, pay rent every Saturday and spend whatever is left on owambe energy at Quilox or suya on Elegushi Beach.

It runs in an ordinary web browser, so there's nothing to install, and it works on a cheap Android phone as well as a laptop. It's free to play, aimed at adults (18+), and it went from launch to one of the most talked-about things on Nigerian social media in a matter of days.

Cartoon Lagos street showing many lives at once in Lagos Life: a customer at a bank counter, a yellow danfo bus, two friends laughing over amala at a buka, a porter carrying a basket at a market stall, a couple on a bench by the lagoon at sunset and DJs at their decks
One city, many lives at once. Every character here could be another real player.

What you actually do in Lagos Life

The everyday loop is simple and very Lagos. Most of your time goes into five things:

Keep your Sim alive

Six needs — hunger, energy, hygiene, bladder, fun and social — drain through the day. Let them drop and your mood and work suffer. Fixing them costs money, so a plate at Amala Shitta and a cheap night at the beach are as important as your salary.

Work and climb

There are 21 careers, from Banking at Marina Towers to DJing at Quilox, and each has five levels. Train the right skill, get promoted and your pay per shift can rise more than tenfold. Compare them in Lagos Life jobs and salaries.

Pay rent every Saturday

Rent leaves your account every Saturday morning. Miss it and it turns into debt, and Baba Landlord comes calling. Nothing teaches budgeting faster.

Go out

The map has 28 places and about 244 activities, from charity at Lagos Central Mosque to a boat cruise on the lagoon. Some places are cheap and open late; others charge more for one activity than most players earn in a month. See the Lagos Life map.

Be social (and a little political)

Chat, make friends, date, get married and send money to other players. Every week the city also elects a governor at Polling Unit 001, and the winner gets a daily allowance and picks a policy that affects everyone.

On top of that sit side gigs, businesses that pay out every evening, land that grows in value, a daily gem hunt and some risky activities that can land you at Eko Police Division. The how to play guide walks through each one.

Why it feels so Lagos

The magic of Lagos Life is in the details. Your start depends on a birth lottery that sorts players into Nepo Babies and LAPO Babies. The cheapest home is a face-me-I-face-you in Mushin. Buy cheap land and omo-onile may show up for their cut. The clubs play songs from up-and-coming Nigerian artists. It's a city sim built on jokes that every Lagosian already knows, which is a big part of why it spread so fast.

Lagos words you'll meet in the game

New to Lagos? Here's a quick glossary so the jokes land:

Lagos slang used in Lagos Life and what it means
WordWhat it means
DanfoThe yellow minibuses that run Lagos public transport. If you start without a car, this is you.
NEPA took the lightA power cut. NEPA was the old national power company, and the name stuck. In the game, your light can go off too.
Face-me-I-face-youA rooming house where every room faces another across a shared corridor, with shared kitchen and bathroom. The cheapest home in Mushin.
Self-containA single room with its own kitchen and bathroom. A small step up, and the starter option in Yaba.
LAPOA real Nigerian microfinance bank (Lift Above Poverty Organisation). A LAPO Baby starts life with a small loan to repay.
Nepo BabyShort for nepotism baby: someone whose family money opens doors. In the game, Daddy pays your Lekki rent.
Omo-onileLand-owning families who turn up after you buy land and ask for “foundation money”. In the game they want 10% of the price.
Buka / Mama PutA cheap local restaurant. You eat at one, can work at one, and can eventually own one.
AlabaruA market porter who carries loads for traders. Carry Load at Balogun Market is the classic no-skill side gig.
Baba LandlordThe landlord. He knows what day it is, and the day is Saturday.

Who made Lagos Life?

Lagos Life was built by Nigerian developer Shalom Rayhamen and published under the studio name Eliy. It first went live on the studio's own site, lagoslife.eliysites.com, before moving to its own address at lagoslife.app.

The Sims 3 meets Lagos Run

In a post on X, the developer explained growing up on The Sims 3 and always wondering what it would look like if Sims lived in a world like ours. The push to actually build it came from Lagos Run, a viral browser game by the developer Eureka where you drive a danfo through Lagos traffic. One showed that Nigerians would play a browser game about their city; the other supplied the life-sim blueprint.

Built in public

Much of the game's development happens in the open. Updates are announced on @Shalom_HeyEliy: the 1 October update, for example, added eight new jobs, including Chef at Amala Shitta, DJ at Quilox and Retail at The Palms, along with a choice between a 9–5 and a night shift. Expect numbers on this wiki to change as the game grows; we note the date we last checked at the top of every page.

How Lagos Life compares to The Sims

The inspiration is obvious, but the two play quite differently:

Lagos Life compared with The Sims 3
The Sims 3Lagos Life
Where you playInstalled on a PC, Mac or consoleAny web browser, phone or computer
PricePaid game and expansionsFree, with optional naira purchases
Other peopleControlled by the gameReal players in one shared city
SettingFictional townsA cartoon Lagos with real landmarks

The trade-off is depth for company. Lagos Life doesn't let you build a house brick by brick, but you're never alone in it: the person at the next table at Amala Shitta is somebody's real cousin in Ibadan, or Houston.

Lagos Life player numbers

Numbers from different sources don't always line up, because some count total sign-ups, some count visits and some count players online at the same moment. The official stats page is the best place to see today's figures.

The exploit week

Growth this fast came with bumps. Early on, a bug let some players generate enormous sums of fake money, and Nigerian X briefly filled with in-game trillionaires and ₦10 billion “campaign giveaways”. The developer reset the exploited money and restored legitimate balances. The lesson for new players: if a balance looks too good to be true, it will be corrected.

Things to know before you start

It's for adults

The official terms set the minimum age at 18, and accounts believed to belong to minors can be closed.

Game money stays in the game

You can buy in-game naira with real money, but it has no real-world value and can't be cashed out. Anyone selling Lagos Life money, codes or a “Lagos Life coin” is not the developer. There are no codes, either.

One person, one account

Extra accounts made to vote more than once or to dodge a ban break the rules. Play one life and make it count.

What's next for Lagos Life

The developer has announced plans to grow beyond Lagos. There are no release dates yet; we'll update this section when there are.

Airport

Fly between virtual cities from inside Lagos Life.

AbujaLife

A second city set in Abuja, announced as in development.

PHLife

A Port Harcourt city, announced as in development.
