Nepo Baby vs LAPO Baby

Lagos Life's birth lottery randomly makes you a Nepo Baby (₦500k, a Lekki flat, Daddy's Prado and a manager job) or a LAPO Baby (a ₦60k loan, a room in Mushin or Yaba, no job — but 25% faster skill learning). You can also start as a UNILAG fresher. You can't choose or reroll.

What the names mean

The birth lottery runs right after you create your character, and it's the moment Lagos Life stops being polite. The server rolls the dice and hands you one of three lives. The names are pure Nigerian internet:

Nepo Baby

Short for “nepotism baby”, the name for someone whose family connections open every door. In the game, Daddy's money pays your rent and gets you a job you didn't apply for.

LAPO Baby

LAPO (Lift Above Poverty Organisation) is a real Nigerian microfinance bank known for small loans to traders. A LAPO Baby starts with one of those loans, a cheap room and a weekly repayment.

UNILAG Fresher

A first-year student at the University of Lagos: a hall bed, a tiny allowance and a degree that pays off later.

Split cartoon scene: on the left a Nepo Baby relaxing in a bright Lekki flat with a Prado parked outside, on the right a LAPO Baby in a small Mushin face-me-I-face-you room counting naira notes for the loan repayment
Same city, same week, very different Saturdays.

Week one in naira

Here's how each start looks after a first week of doing the sensible thing: working every shift available and paying every bill. LAPO Babies are shown on a Banking job (₦11,600 a shift), the best-paid job you can get with no skill. Food and fun aren't included.

The gap is brutal: a Nepo Baby ends week one with roughly five times what a LAPO Baby has, and the UNILAG fresher has barely moved. But remember a LAPO Baby's cash includes a loan that still has to be repaid, and nobody's week one decides their week ten.

Which start is better?

Short term: Nepo Baby, easily

No rent, no loan and about ₦157,500 a week from day one. A Nepo Baby can afford a POS Stand in week one and never has to worry about Baba Landlord.

Long term: the gap closes

LAPO Babies and UNILAG freshers learn every skill 25% faster. In practice, a skill level that takes a Nepo Baby ten hours of training takes them eight. Since promotions are gated by skill, they reach the high-paying levels sooner, and level 5 is where the real money is: a level-5 Musician earns ₦99,000 a shift, more than three times the Nepo manager salary.

The UNILAG degree payoff

Graduates earn 25% more per shift for good. On that same top Music shift, that's ₦123,750 instead of ₦99,000. It's the slowest start and the strongest finish.

How to play a Nepo Baby

Don't coast on Daddy's money

The manager job is comfortable, but almost every career pays at least double its shift rate at level 5, and the best pay three times as much. Pick one you actually want, train its skill in your evenings and switch once you qualify.

Make the ₦500,000 work

Your pocket money is exactly the price of a POS Stand, which pays out every evening at 6 PM. Buy it after your first paycheck so you're never at zero, then stack businesses with the profits.

Watch the weekend

The real Nepo Baby trap is Victoria Island. Quilox, Polanco and the Lagoon Boat Cruise can swallow a week's salary in one night. Enjoy it, just decide the budget before you arrive.

How to play a LAPO Baby

Mushin or Yaba?

Yaba gives you ₦20,000 more cash up front but costs ₦3,600 more a week in rent. Mushin pulls ahead after about six weeks and stays ahead, so pick Mushin unless you need the extra cash immediately. Lekki is locked at first: “With LAPO money? 😂 Work your way here.”

Get a job on day one

You start the day after you apply, so don't wait. Banking has the best starting pay with no skill needed. If you'd rather keep your days free for gigs, look at DJ.

Handle the loan

  • You owe ₦12,000 a week for six weeks, ₦72,000 in total.
  • Missed payments add a 10% penalty, so put it aside with your rent every Friday.
  • You can repay early. After week six, that ₦12,000 a week is yours to keep.

Use your 25% advantage

Your faster learning is your way out. Train the skill your career uses every spare evening; it's the best return you have. Fill gaps with no-skill gigs: Carry Load at Balogun Market or Help at the Buka at Amala Shitta.

How to play a UNILAG fresher

Surviving on ₦1,800 a week

You start as a 100-level student with ₦14,000, no loan, a ₦1,200/week hall bed and a ₦3,000 weekly allowance. That leaves about ₦1,800 spare, so no-skill gigs aren't optional. Lean on UNILAG itself: it has more activities than anywhere else on the map, many of them cheap.

Pick a course

Courses take 4–5 years of game time. There are eight to choose from:

  • Computer Science
  • Systems Engineering
  • Mass Communication
  • Law
  • Accounting
  • Creative Arts
  • Nursing Science
  • Education

After graduation

Your degree adds 25% to every shift for the rest of your Lagos Life. Combined with fast skill learning, a graduate who chose a high-ceiling career can end up out-earning a Nepo Baby who never left the manager job.

Birth lottery myths

  • “Your look or personality changes the odds.” No. The lottery ignores everything you chose.
  • “Start a new life to reroll.” No. The result is fixed for your account.
  • “The odds are 50/50.” Unknown. The game doesn't publish them.
  • “LAPO Babies can never live in Lekki.” Only at first. Earn your way there.
  • “Nepo Babies always win.” Only in week one. Skills decide the long game.

FAQ

Can I choose to be a Nepo Baby in Lagos Life?

No. The server decides at random during character creation. Your look, personality and dream don't affect it.

Can I reroll the birth lottery?

No. The result is fixed for your account, and starting a new life doesn't reroll it.

What are the odds of being a Nepo Baby?

The game doesn't publish the odds.

Is LAPO Baby bad?

It's a harder start — a ₦72,000 loan to repay and no job — but LAPO Babies learn every skill 25% faster, which pays off as you get promoted.

What is a LAPO Baby?

A LAPO Baby starts poor with a microfinance-style loan (named after LAPO, a real Nigerian microfinance bank) and a cheap room in Mushin or Yaba.

Should a LAPO Baby choose Mushin or Yaba?

Mushin. Yaba gives ₦20,000 more cash up front but costs ₦3,600 more a week, so Mushin is ahead after about six weeks and every week after that.

Is the UNILAG fresher start worth it?

For patient players, yes. Money is very tight at first, but there's no loan, skills come 25% faster and graduates earn 25% more per shift for good.
